Society‘s values and expectations towards women change as they get older, specifically with regard to marriage and fertility. However, this further impacts the unequal treatment and injustice women experience as they grow up.
I have always looked forward to my birthdays, but after I turned 20, I started to dread it instead, mainly because the attitude of Taiwanese society as a whole has become increasingly indifferent towards women when they are aging. Both men and women have told me to cherish the moments of youth as a woman, as if a woman is not worthy of being loved after a certain age. What is a woman, apart from her social and material function in producing children, nursing, and renewing the workforce?
